  • 1920's Sadie Nemser Couture Beaded Floral Appliqué Velvet & Lace Dress

    ID: 0926213
    Size: small
    Condition: VGood

A magnificent and incredibly rare Sadie Nemser Couture velvet and lace 'robe de style' dress dating back to 1924. This garment took my breath away from the moment I saw it. It's truly wearable masterpiece. Mrs. Sadie Nemser only sold her unique dress through her New York boutique and a select few high-end department stores. Nemser even designed the US First Lady Grace Coolidge's velvet inaugural gown which has become one of the most famous First Lady dresses ever. In July 1928, Sadie and her husband were awarded the "French National Legion of Honor" for their endeavors with the Congress of Garment Retailers of America for concordance between French and American garment industries. Sadie Nemser played a strong part in the history of design as we know it today.
This gorgeous baby-blue silk velvet and creme lace dress in the iconic 'robe de style' silhouette is a wonderful example of her genius. The detailing is extraordinary; colorful silk flowers and glass beaded stems! This three dimensional appliqué garden, which has been embroidered by hand, must have taken weeks to complete. I love the capelet style drop-waist bodice with exaggerated skirting. The fullness in the skirt is so dramatic and was probably worn with panniers as undergarments at each side. We added many pictures so you can appreciate and understand the rare workmanship.

    Measurements
    Bust: 35 inches
    Waist: 30 inches
    Total Length: 47 inches

This Sadie Nemser Couture dress is in very good wearable condition with no holes, alternations or missing appliqués. Presents beautifully. Only sign of wear is some age related surface discolor to the silk-velvet. Please message for detailed pictures. Due to the historical nature of the piece, cleaning left to the purchaser. A wearable investment piece that will continue to increase in value.
