  • 1967 Don Loper Couture For Barbra Streisand Black Hourglass Gown & Hat

Own a major slice of Old Hollywood celebrity history! An important and truly breathtaking black silk velvet hourglass corset mermaid trained gown and matching over-sized wide brim hat custom made for Barbra Streisand by Don Loper for her unforgettable CBS special titled "The Belle of 14th Street". The whole show was situated in a 1900’s Victorian Vaudeville theater. As director Joe Layton said, “Barbra wanted something different. All the acts, songs, skits and specialties had to be derivative of the period between 1895-1912.” This gorgeous look, which comes complete with Certificate of Authenticity from Barbra Streisand herself, truly embodies the essence of this beloved superstar.
Barbra asked her dear friend and accomplished costume designer Don Loper to handle the task of creating this seductive showstopper. The fully boned corset bodice has the most flattering open plunge neckline all trimmed in luxurious silk satin. A nipped waist with hourglass mermaid skirting to the floor creates the perfect amount of drama. Just when you think it couldn't possibly get better, the gown also comes with her custom original feather trimmed wide brim hat! We took many pictures so you can see all the care put into this iconic look. Early custom Barbra Streisand garments are almost never found on the open market. It is even more rare to find one that is so identifiable as Barbara Streisand. She will truly go down in history as one of our great American talents earning Grammys, Emmys, a Tony, and a Peabody for her work. This is such a museum worthy piece that will instantly become a favorite in your collection.
