Incredibly beautiful and ultra rare Molyneux haute couture gown dating back to the mid 1970's. The history behind this  Parisian label is a rich one. After a period working for the British fashion designer Lucile, Molyneux opened his fashion house in Paris and became known for his "never too rich or too thin" idle slim "refined at the edge of outrageous" look, frowning on superfluous decoration. He firmly believed in simplicity; subtle in color and perfect in cut. Molyneux dressed the likes of Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Gertrude Lawrence, Margaret Leighton, and Vivien Leigh. His followers included Christian Dior and Pierre Balmain.
This seductive black crepe and semi-sheer floral silk gown is a wonderful example of this French fashion house. I love the vibrant rainbow of color used in the floral print and chic front covered buttons. The bodice has a curved halter-neck with chic back-bow detail and hourglass nipped waist. Such a nod to 1930's fashion! The skirting is composed of a peplum style overlay, which flow beautifully when worn, and a more fitted front slit underskirt. This gorgeous garment was definitely made for someone of great importance and style! As Caroline Milbank once pointed out, "Molyneux was the designer to whom a fashionable woman would turn if she wanted to be absolutely right without being utterly predictable."
