  • 1951 Helen Rose Gold Lamé Egyptian 'The Great Caruso' Film-Worn Dress

A breathtaking and truly one-of-a-kind metallic gold pleated lamé Egyptian novelty dress designed by Helen Rose for the MGM 1951 film "The Great Caruso". Helen Rose received an Academy Award nominate for Best Costume Design for her stunning work in this film. She was nominated a further eight times and was well-known for designing famous iconic looks of the stars of this era. She designed the wedding dress of Grace Kelly when she married Prince Rainier of Monaco in 1956. She also designed clothing for Elizabeth Taylor in the movies Father of the Bride and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof as well as Elizabeth Taylor's bridal gown when she married Conrad Nicky Hilton. Helen Rose, like Edith Head and Irene Lentz, was one of the rare women who became chief costume designer for a major film studio. Her style was elegant and understated but still extremely innovative.
This special piece of Hollywood history was worn by American singer Blanche Thebom during the final trio scene. 'The Great Caruso; was a massive commercial success and the most profitable film for MGM in 1951. This metallic gold lamé costume looks even more gorgeous in person than it does on the big scene. So extremely well-made! The curved dolman-sleeve bodice works effortlessly with the detachable embroidered collar. This same colorful felt embroidered trim wraps round the waist and drapes into an impressive front tasseled sash. Just when you think this dress couldn't get any better, you notice the skirt is fully pleated. Comes with offical certificate of authenticity so you can be sure you are getting a true piece of Old Hollywood. We added many pictures so you can appreciate this museum quality treasure.
