  • 1978 Bob Mackie for Mitzi Gaynor Documented Sequin Feather Dance Costume

Breathtaking Bob Mackie designed sequin illusion dance costume made for Mitzi Gaynor's 1978 television special "What's Hot, What's Not". She finds herself in an Egyptian Discotheque where she showcases her best dance moves in this showstopper! While working with designer Ray Aghayan, Mackie soon began creating iconic looks for divas who would make him a household name- most notably Carol Burnett, Diana Ross, Cher and Mitzi Gaynor. Though this Mitzi Gaynor piece was constructed at the famed Elizabeth Courtney costumer, and only has the Courtney label, it is guaranteed to be a Bob Mackie original design. Bob Mackie's early work with his first collaborator, Ray Aghayan came from their design studios at Elizabeth Courtney's on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles. Mackie designed multiple costumes for Gaynor and won two Emmy awards for her TV specials: "Mitzi Zings Into Spring" and "Mitzi Roarin' in the '20s".
These early Bob Mackie costumes are rare, as they were not mass produced and were incredibly expensive to make. This iconic treasure is a perfect example of his genius. The nude leotard is elaborately covered in vertical stripes of white sequins which extend beyond the leotard finishing with huge ostrich feathers and large topaz rhinestones. The look is, of course, to make you appear nearly nude while floating feathers dance around you! This is such a beautiful museum worthy piece of fashion and celebrity history that will instantly become a favorite in your collection.

    Measurements
    Bust: 32-33 inches
    Waist: 24-26 inches
    Hips: up to 35 inches

This Mitzi Gaynor worn Bob Mackie designed dance look is in excellent condition with no rips, stains or holes. The construction of this garment is impeccable and would make a fantastic stage moment. Perfectly working back center zipper which is cleverly concealed. Only sign of age are a few missing sequins which are hard to notice when worn. Highly wearable and an investment piece that will continue to increase in value.
