  • 1920's Frederick Loeser & Co Metallic Embroidered Beaded Red Velvet Cape

    ID: 1221211
    Size: large
    Condition: Excellent

A truly breathtaking Frederick Loeser & Co museum quality metallic gold embroidered dark red silk-velvet cape dating back to the early 1920's. Frederick Loeser & Co was a high-end department store in Brooklyn, New York founded in 1860 by German immigrant Frederick Loeser (1833-1911). The company started out as a go-to for embroidery and trimmings. Their flagship store on 484 Fulton Street served as one of Brooklyn's major landmarks for 65 years. This luxurious dark red silk-velvet and sable fur cape is a wonderful example of the couture quality that came out of this successful store. The metallic threaded deco floral embroidery adds a perfect amount of shimmer to this rare treasure. I love the 3-dimensional appliqués and beadwork throughout. The heavily ruched padded collar with impressive smocking really frames the face beautifully. The ultra-soft sable fur trim along the inner collar and bottom hemline compliment the cape so well. Extravagant garments from the 1920's are difficult to find, especially in a coveted color. Evening capes from the flapper era remain a perennial favorite, perhaps because no other period combined such opulence with such youthful flair. The free-size silhouette embodies the flapper's "party till dawn" attitude while the expensive fabrics whisper "wealth and status." The mark of a truly fashionable garment is that it remains stylish and timeless 100 years later. The pictures say it all.
