1960s Madame Grès Haute Couture Blue Beaded Sheer Silk Trained Gown

An unforgettable and incredibly rare Madame Grès haute couture vibrant cobalt-blue sheer silk three piece gown ensemble dating back to the mid 1960's. This dramatic look was custom commissioned by Contessa Marina Cicogna, a famous Italian film producer and photographer. The New York Times describes her as "one of the most powerful women in European cinema". One of her film's, Belle de Jour, even won the Golden Lion at the 1967 Venice Film Festival.
Madame Grès (1903-1993) was a remarkable couturier in the 20th century, known for using delicate pleats which turned ordinary fabric into Greek sculpture. The drapery of her gowns also showed her technical virtuosity. Long swags of continuous strips of fabric would be incorporated into her creations, giving her work a sense of classical antiquity. This stunning gown has so much detail, you can tell it was made with loving devotion. The alluring strapless bodice has an impressive interior boned corset structure. The sheer over blouse nips in at the waist and has elegant 3/4-length sleeves. My favorite designer element is the opulent glass-bead cluster neck and sleeve trimming. This intricate hand beading must have taken weeks to complete. When making your grand entrance into any event, Grès knew not to forget a dramatic fully trained sheer cape which is a statement piece in it's own right. The cape has an elegant draped collar and over-sized beaded cluster closure. Grès had an extraordinarily long career. Through each decade, which encompassed huge changes in fashion, her work remained consistent and timeless. A rare piece of fashion history with wonderful provenance in museum quality.
