With its vivid cotton novelty and flawless styling, this Alfred Shaheen designer sundress has the casual elegance the 1950's were known for. The print is unbelievable; large scale Chinese dragons with incredible iridescent shimmer. I adore the low-cut plunge, sweetheart ruched shelf-bust complete with a removable halter strap. The sides of the bodice are stretchy and the bust is lined so it can be worn without a brassiere. The hourglass nipped-waist full circle-skirt finishes this garment off with an iconic femme fatale vibe. Alfred Shaheen was the most creative and prolific Hawaiian designer in post-WWII fashion. Shaheen pioneered Hawaii's vital garment manufacturing industry by stretching beyond the limits imposed by the isolation of the Hawaiian Islands. His team of local artists and designers reflected a blend of Japanese, Hawaiian, Chinese and other ethnic groups. Those who worked in the House of Shaheen were encouraged to research, explore and incorporate cultural motifs in fabric design. Shaheen sent his designers outside the Islands on international trips to gather new ideas. These were combined to create Shaheen’s “fashion fusion” style. A beautiful example of true wearable art!
