Undiminished by time, this 1920's French couture numbered "Idole" named metallic dress still casts its magical spell. This exceptional beauty is fashioned in light-weight shimmering gold lamé fabric of the highest quality. It is then lavishly embellished with sparkling bronze eastern embroidery in one of the most gorgeous motifs I've ever seen. This work must have taken weeks to complete and is all done by hand. The simple thin-strap low plunge bodice trimmed with metallic lace balances out the elaborate adornment. The exacting perfection of the asymmetric drape construction is beyond compare. The combination of the silhouette and lamé with eastern embroidery definitely brings Callot Soeurs to mind. I wouldn't be surprised if this creation was by a famous designer, as it has all the hallmarks of a couture piece from this era. We needed to add many detail pictures so one can appreciate the masterful achievement. Extravagant garments from the 1920's remain a perennial favorite, perhaps because no other period combined such opulence with such youthful flair. The pictures say it all.
