Pierre Balmain worked under Robert Pigiuet, Molyneux, and Lucian Lelong, where he worked closely with Christian Dior. In 1945 he finally opened his own couture house. Balmain created a very sculptural quality which was always allied with a ladylike essence. His garments have a body and a shape of their own. This breathtaking navy-blue wool crepe tailored mod cocktail dress from this 1968 Fall/Winter collection is a wonderful example of his genius. The bodice has a stunning mock turtleneck with unique scarf-tie. I adore the 3/4-length sleeves and unique tiered A-line skirting. The back asymmetric button design really catches the eye and takes the idea of a "cocktail" to new levels. Overall construction is true couture level as one would expect from such a skilled designer. Balmain's glamorous garments were worn by the likes of Bridget Bardot, Katherine Hepburn and Marlene Dietrich and I can surely see why.
