Spectacular Pierre Cardin haute couture gown and voluminous cape ensemble dating back to the his fall-winter 1978 collection In 1951 Cardin opened his own couture house and by 1957, he started a ready-to-wear line; a bold move for a French couturier at the time. Cardin is known for his avant-garde style and his unique geometric shapes, often ignoring the female form. This ultra-rare futuristic look is a perfect example of his genuine. The construction of this garment is amazing- yards of gathered charcoal gray silk-taffeta that effortlessly flow around the body. I love the dramatic rhinestone bodice band which has the most fantastic sparkle. The matching high to low sculpted petal cape is a statement piece in its own right. This is vintage fashion on the highest level with everything about the piece done to work with the rest. A beautiful example of wearable designer history that looks like it just walked off the Paris runway.
